Can you walk us through your career journey and how you arrived at your current position?
I have a 35-year career journey that began after studying at college and Panjab University, Chandigarh. My academic background includes extensive research in both Management and Legal fields, which has significantly shaped my professional growth. Additionally, my active participation in the National Lok Adalat has broadened my understanding of legal processes and social justice initiatives. Over the years, I have gained diverse experience across corporate environments, teaching, and academic administration, each of which has contributed to my holistic development as a professional. This blend of education and practical experience has equipped me with a well-rounded perspective, allowing me to successfully navigate various challenges and opportunities in my career. Ultimately, these experiences have played a pivotal role in helping me attain my current position, where I continue to apply the knowledge and skills cultivated throughout my journey.
What is your leadership philosophy, and how has it evolved over time?
The leadership philosophy I practice is centred on leading from the front while actively involving the team in the decision-making process. I believe in fostering a positive attitude and placing trust in my people, which has proven essential in understanding human behaviour and psychology. By cultivating this trust, I have been able to tap into the strengths of each team member, creating a cohesive and motivated group. This approach not only builds stronger relationships but also empowers individuals to take ownership of their work. Over time, this philosophy has been instrumental in developing a high-performing, successful team capable of achieving collective goals.
How do you approach problem-solving when faced with complex challenges?
By patiently analysing and understanding complex and challenging situations, I gain valuable insights that allow me to identify alternative solutions to resolve the issue effectively. Taking time to fully comprehend all aspects of the problem not only reveals the root cause but also helps in exploring various approaches to address it. Additionally, I believe in actively supporting the concerned team members throughout the process of executing the action plan. By offering guidance, encouragement, and necessary resources, I ensure that they are well-prepared and confident in carrying out their tasks. This collaborative approach not only resolves the immediate situation but also fosters a stronger, more capable team in the long run. It builds trust, enhances problem-solving skills, and prepares the team to handle future challenges with resilience and creativity. Ultimately, this method of leadership combines thoughtful analysis with active support, leading to successful outcomes and a cohesive, high-performing team.
How do you maintain a balance between your professional and personal life?
A fine-tuned balance in life is achieved by effectively managing both personal and professional responsibilities with a positive mindset while consciously avoiding negative thoughts. By focusing on the positive aspects of life, I can stay resilient in the face of challenges and maintain mental clarity. Regular morning walks, combined with consistent physical exercise, have played a crucial role in keeping my body healthy and my mind sharp. These habits not only enhance my physical well-being but also contribute to a balanced mental state. This daily routine helps me stay energized and focused, which in turn enables me to better manage the demands of both my personal and professional life. By prioritizing health and well-being, I am able to maintain this harmony, ensuring that neither area of life is neglected, and that I can approach each day with a sense of fulfilment and balance.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind in your industry or organization?
My personal experience has given me a profound understanding of the importance of Communication, Competence, Commitment, and Performance in achieving success in professional life. These four pillars are not only essential for individual growth but also for the development of any institution. For the next generation, I strongly recommend embracing these values to elevate the University Institute of Legal Studies at Chandigarh University to new heights. By fostering strong communication, honing their skills and competence, demonstrating unwavering commitment, and maintaining high performance, students can enhance their learning experience and better prepare for their future careers. This approach will contribute to a more dynamic and experiential learning environment, allowing students to gain practical knowledge that complements their academic studies. By focusing on these key principles, the Institute can continue to evolve as a leader in legal education, providing its students with the tools they need to succeed.
