India crush England by an innings and 64 runs to seal 4-1 series win

India completed a dominant performance against England in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, winning by an innings and 64 runs on the third day. This was India’s 10th consecutive Test series win at home, and their fourth 4-1 series win in the last five years.

The star of the show was Ravichandran Ashwin, who took his 30th five-wicket haul in his 100th Test, finishing with 5/77  in the second innings. Ashwin also scored a valuable 47 with the bat and was named the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series for his all-round brilliance.

England, who were bowled out for 218 in the first innings, resumed their second innings at 103/5, still trailing by 156 runs. Joe Root, who was unbeaten on 34, tried to resist the Indian attack, but found little support from the other end. Ashwin dismissed Ben Stokes and Mark Wood in quick succession, before Jasprit Bumrah wrapped up the tail with two wickets in two balls. Root remained not out on 66, but it was a futile effort as England were all out for 213.

India had declared their first innings at 477/9, after Subman Gill and Rohit Sharma scored centuries on the second day. Gill made 110, his second Test hundred, while Sharma scored 103, his ninth Test ton.  Devdutt Padikkal also chipped in with 65, as India piled on the runs against a hapless England bowling attack. Shoaib Bashir was the only bowler to take five wickets, but he conceded 173 runs in the process.

India had already won the series after winning the first, third and fourth Tests in Chennai, Ahmedabad and Mumbai respectively. England’s only win came in the second Test in Chennai, where they won by 227 runs. India will now play New Zealand in the World Test Championship final in June, while England will tour Australia for the Ashes later this year.
