Anant Ambani’s New Role Marks a Turning Point for Reliance Industries

Anant Ambani

Big news out of Mumbai this week: Anant Ambani, the youngest of Mukesh Ambani’s three children, is poised to play a far more active role at Reliance Industries. At its April 25 board meeting, the company green-lit his appointment as Executive Director, elevating him from a Non-Executive Director, effective May 1, 2025, for a five-year term, pending shareholder approval.

If you’ve followed Reliance’s green-energy push, you’ve seen Anant’s fingerprints everywhere. Since August 2022, he’s been at the helm of the new-energy business, championing clean-fuel plants and pilot carbon-capture units. Now, armed with full executive authority, he’ll turn those pilot projects into large-scale operations. His mission? To help Reliance hit its ambitious net-zero carbon target by 2035.

Imagine massive refineries retrofitted to convert crude into sustainable fuels instead of just petrol and diesel. Picture carbon-capture facilities trapping CO₂ before it ever escapes, alongside advanced recycling plants breathing new life into old plastics. Under Anant’s leadership, these aren’t just concepts on slide decks—they’re the next big expansion for one of India’s largest conglomerates.

Anant’s ascent feels both earned and strategic. He cut his teeth as a board member of Jio Platforms (since March 2020), Reliance New Energy and Reliance New Solar Energy (since June 2021), and Reliance Retail Ventures (since May 2022), all while completing his degree at Brown University. Unlike his siblings—Akash, who chairs Jio Infocomm, and Isha, who leads Reliance Retail Ventures, Anant is the first to take on a full-time, operational executive role at the parent company.

Beyond green energy, this move signals a carefully planned generational handover. Mukesh Ambani is clearly preparing the next generation, granting them decision-making power today to ensure a steady transition tomorrow. For investors, that clarity in leadership reduces uncertainty. For India, it means one of its flagship companies is doubling down on sustainability, aligning corporate strategy with national climate commitments.

Keep an eye out in the coming months for announcements on new sustainable-fuel facilities, carbon-capture partnerships, or breakthroughs in recycling tech. If Anant Ambani’s track record is any indication, those pilot projects won’t stay pilots for long.
