DRDO Approves 7 New Projects to Boost India’s Defence Production
In a significant move towards bolstering India’s self-reliance in the defence sector, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has approved seven new projects under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme. This initiative is designed to promote innovation and technological progress within the country, particularly among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and start-ups, which are essential to the defence and aerospace sectors.
1. Indigenous Scenario and Sensor Simulation Toolkit:
Awarded to Oxygen 2 Innovation Pvt Ltd, Noida, this toolkit for pilot simulator training offers realistic scenarios for comprehensive mission planning and large force engagements. As a domestically developed tool, it will significantly enhance pilot training and operational readiness.
2. Underwater Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicle:
Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt Ltd, Pune, will develop a multifaceted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capable of underwater deployment for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). This initiative aims to revolutionize marine battlefield equipment.
3. Long-Range Remotely Operated Vehicles for Detection & Neutralisation:’
IROV Technologies Pvt Limited, Kochi, will create dual-use remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that can detect, classify, locate, and neutralize underwater objects, ensuring the protection of key assets from operational threats. These ROVs will improve underwater security and boost operational efficiency.
4. Development of Ice Detection Sensor for Aircraft:
Craftlogic Labs Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, will create sensors to detect in-flight icing conditions, triggering the aircraft’s anti-icing mechanisms. This development is crucial for enhancing flight safety and operational efficiency.
Promoting Self-Reliance and Innovation
The TDF scheme is a cornerstone of DRDO’s efforts to achieve Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in defence technology. By granting these projects to private industries, DRDO not only stimulates the development of advanced technologies but also enhances the military industrial ecosystem in India. The participation of MSMEs and start-ups in these projects highlights the focus on nurturing domestic talent and resources, ensuring that the defence sector benefits from the flexibility and innovation of smaller enterprises.
DRDO’s approval of these seven projects marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s defence capabilities and promoting self-reliance. By fostering innovation and leveraging the expertise of MSMEs and start-ups, India is poised to make substantial advancements in defence technology, ensuring a robust and secure future.
